Italy’s Sports Minister, Andrea Abodi, has firmly rejected suggestions that Italy could take Iran’s place at the 2026 World Cup, calling the idea both unrealistic and inappropriate.
The proposal was reportedly raised by Paolo Zampolli, an envoy appointed by Donald Trump, during discussions involving FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Speaking to Sky News, Abodi dismissed the notion outright. “Italy’s possible re-qualification… is firstly not possible, and secondly, not appropriate. I don’t know what comes first. Qualification is on the pitch,” he said.
Echoing that stance, the President of the Italian National Olympic Committee, Luciano Buonfiglio, said he would be offended if Italy were handed a spot without earning it.
“First of all, I don’t think it’s possible. Second, I’d feel offended. In order to go to the World Cup, you have to earn it,” he stated.
Meanwhile, there has been no indication of any change involving Iran. Officials from Iran national football team have continued participating in FIFA’s World Cup preparation meetings, and no request for withdrawal has been made.
As it stands, Italy’s position is clear: World Cup places are decided on merit—not politics.
