England captain and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has won the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or, becoming the first English player in 25 years to claim football’s most prestigious individual honour.
The 33-year-old was presented with the coveted trophy by Brazilian football legend Ronaldo at a ceremony held at the London Palladium on Monday, with the announcement sparking loud cheers and chants from the crowd.
Kane’s triumph marks a defining moment in his career, ending England’s long wait for a winner of the men’s award since former Liverpool forward Michael Owen claimed the prize in 2001.
Visibly emotional as he accepted the honour on home soil, Kane admitted he was struggling to find the words to describe the significance of the achievement.
“Wow, wow, wow. I’m almost speechless. Being here in London makes it extra special. Thank you to everyone who voted for me,” he said.
The England skipper was quick to acknowledge the contributions of his team-mates, stressing that his individual success would not have been possible without their support.
He also expressed gratitude to Bayern Munich, crediting the German giants with helping him develop both professionally and personally since joining the club.
“Without my team-mates it wouldn’t be possible. I am wishing Vincent Kompany very well, I hope this has given you a bit of energy,” Kane added.
Reflecting on his time at Bayern, the striker said his experience in Germany had played a significant role in his growth as a footballer and as an individual.
“Since I have been with Bayern I have improved as player and as a person. It’s an honour to play for Bayern,” he said.
Kane also paid tribute to his England team-mates, describing the past year as memorable despite its challenges and dedicating the award to the national team.
“To my England team-mates. We had a special year, it wasn’t perfect, but we had a lot of great moments. It was truly an honour to captain you, this is for all of us,” he said.
The victory represents another landmark achievement for Kane, whose consistency at club and international level has established him among the leading figures in world football.
By becoming the first Englishman to win the men’s Ballon d’Or since Owen in 2001, Kane has ended a 25-year wait and secured his place in the history of English football.
