A former lawmaker that represented Ijebu – Ode state Constituency, Olugbenga Lekuti, has advised leaders and politicians from the Ogunwest Senatorial District (Yewa Awori) not to allow the governorship seat of Ogun State elude the zone in 2027.
Lekuti, who is from Ogun East advised Yewa Awori people, especially the politicians, to speak with one voice, cooperate with one another and step down for each other so as to allow a sole candidate to emerge from the zone.
The ex – lawmaker spoke with The Nation on Tuesday in Abeokuta, the state capital after a meeting of the Ogun Visionaries, a statewide based socio-political organisation that is rooting for a governor of Ogunwest extraction in 2027.
The Visionaries meeting where the group unanimously drummed support for the zone was convened by the Coordinator/Convener, Hon. Leye Odunjo, a former member of the Ogun State Assembly from Ado/Odo/Ota Local Government.
Lekuti said that even though two or three persons from other districts may contest the governorship seat in the next general elections, a single candidate from Ogun West will enhance the zone’s chances of making it to the Oke – Mosan Governor’s Office in 2027.
He also noted that despite the possibility of people from other zones showing interest in Ogun 2027 governorship race, YAYI(Senator Olamilekan Adeola) from Ogun West is most suitable for the job and best prepared for it.
He said, “For power to move to Ogunwest in 2027, we need to advise the Ogunwest people to speak with one voice, cooperate with each other and step down for each other so that one person can emerge as sole candidate from the zone.
“However, there are other places (Senatorial Districts) where two or three persons may come out but God knows the best. I believe this time around, Yayi is a super aspirant and most suitable than others. He is working hard just like Gbenga Daniel worked hard when he was aspiring to be Governor of Ogun State.
“We had many in Remo that were aspiring to be governor at the time but Daniel worked more than the others to emerge candidate from Remo in Ogun East. Likewise, YAYI is working harder than others.”
Speaking earlier during the group’s meeting, Hon. Leye Odunjo lamented that Ogunwest has not produced a governor for the state since its creation in 1976, describing the zone and its people as the most marginalised in the areas of employment, appointment and project execution in the last 50 years.
He called for unity and strategy in order to achieve the Ogunwest governorship agenda in 2027.
“As 2027 draws near, Yewa Awori stands at a defining moment in its political journey. The ambition to produce the Governor of Ogun State is valid, heartfelt, and long overdue.
“Therefore, in the 2027 governorship election, we say this is the time to speak with one voice for the purpose of equity, fairness and justice, the time has come for Yewa Awori and Ogun West to present the next Governor of Ogun State,” he said.
