The Nigerian Army has uncovered what is believed to be the remains of a military couple killed in 2022 during a raid on a suspected militant camp in Imo State.
The breakthrough followed an intelligence-driven operation carried out on Thursday, April 24, along the Ubaha–Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area.
Troops of the 82 Division were deployed to the area as part of a clearance mission targeting hideouts linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
According to a statement issued by the Army on Saturday, the operation led to the dismantling of the camp and the discovery of several shallow graves within the forest.
The mission was also aimed at locating the remains of Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew, who were abducted and killed in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.
After securing the area, troops conducted a detailed search, leading to the excavation of the graves and recovery of suspected human remains believed to be those of the slain personnel.
The Army said the remains have been secured for comprehensive forensic examination, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities.
Authorities added that efforts are ongoing to engage the families of the fallen soldiers and ensure they receive proper identification and dignified burial rites in honour of their service.
