No fewer than 130 people have so far been found to be suffering different stages of scrotal hernia in Ebonyi State as of April 2024 but the assessment and profiling of hernia cases are still ongoing.
This is just as wife of the state governor, Mrs. Uzoamaka Nwifuru pledged to offer them – the 130 scrotal hernia patients, free medical surgery this week.
Mrs. Nwifuru disclosed this at Onueke, the headquarters of Ezza South Local Government Area in the state during the flag off of her pet project, Better Health for Rural Women and Internally Displaced Persons Foundation (BERWO) in the local government.
She said the free surgery would be sponsored by the pet project in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation, adding that the profiling of the scrotal hernia patients in the state was still ongoing.
The Ebonyi First Lady also explained that the pet project, in conjunction with the state Primary Health Development Agency would also provide free camping and vaccination for sufferers of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).
According to her, the free treatment would be given to young girls between ages of 9 and 15, adding that HPV is a deadly disease that causes cervical cancer in women and cancer in men.
Similarly, the pathetic situation of a family of 6 children from whom 5 are blind, caught the attention of the First Lady who expressed sadness over it and promised to construct a bungalow for the family to lessen their economic burden.
“BERWO foundation in conjunction with Ebonyi State Primary Health Development Agency is about to flag off important campaign against Human Papilloma Virus infection (HPV).
“This virus is the main causes of cervical cancer in females. The virus also causes cancer in males. The HPV vaccine is targeted to be given to young girls between the ages of 9-15 years.

“Also, BERWO Foundation in conjunction with notable health partner in the state will soon commence screening and treatment of early stage of cervical cancer in the state.
“The Foundation has commenced the enrollment of people living with scrotal hernia for immediate and urgent surgery across the 13 local government areas of the state.
“As it stands, we have already recorded 130 patients waiting for the surgery which will commence next week,” she stated.
Earlier, the Chairman of the local government, Mrs. Euphemia Nwali commended Mrs. Nwifuru for her pet project which she said has touched many lives and saved many souls.
She assured that the local government would support the project to continue to save humanity in the society.
