A Kaduna State High Court has postponed its decision on the bail application of former governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, ordering that he remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) until early June.
The presiding judge, Darius Khobo, adjourned the ruling on Tuesday after hearing arguments from both the defence and prosecution. The case involves an amended nine-count charge against El-Rufai, including allegations of fraud, abuse of office, and corruption. Following revisions to the charge sheet, he is now the sole defendant in the matter.
During the hearing, the court focused on the former governor’s bail request, which prosecutors opposed. They argued that granting bail could jeopardize ongoing investigations, raising concerns that the defendant might interfere with the process.
Although arguments were concluded, the court deferred its decision and directed that El-Rufai remain in ICPC custody pending the ruling.
Defence counsel, Ukpong Akpan, criticized the court’s stance, describing it as unwarranted and troubling.
He contended that the decision appeared to rely on the assumption that his client’s previous position as governor increased the likelihood of interference.
He said the legal team disagreed with that reasoning and would take further steps to challenge the outcome through appropriate legal channels.
Akpan also suggested that the case carries political undertones, though he emphasized that the defence would continue to act within the bounds of the law.
He urged supporters of the former governor to remain calm and law-abiding, noting that setbacks are part of legal battles and should not provoke panic or disorder.
The case has been adjourned to the first week of June, when the court is expected to deliver its ruling on the bail application and continue proceedings.
