The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a senior police officer captured in a viral video allegedly threatening violence and displaying conduct described as unbecoming of an officer of the Nigeria Police Force.
Addressing journalists on Friday, the Command confirmed that the officer identified in the video is Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Newton Isokpehi, who is currently serving within the command.
According to the police, the officer was swiftly identified and taken into custody following an internal review of the footage circulating on social media.
The Command disclosed that disciplinary proceedings have already commenced against the officer in line with the ethical standards and disciplinary regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
It further revealed that ASP Isokpehi has been subjected to a drug test as part of ongoing investigations aimed at uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring transparency in the process.
Condemning the officer’s actions, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the conduct as unacceptable and damaging to public trust in the Force.
“The Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined institution that will not condone misconduct, abuse of office, incitement, or any form of unprofessional behaviour capable of undermining public trust and confidence,” the statement said.
The Command assured residents of Anambra State and the general public that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public, stressing that any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.
Police authorities also used the opportunity to caution officers and personnel of the Command to remain professional, emotionally balanced, and respectful in the discharge of their duties, especially in an era where public conduct is constantly under scrutiny through social media.
The statement, signed on behalf of the Commissioner of Police by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, DCP Ngozi Ezeabata, also appreciated members of the public and civil society groups for providing credible information that promotes accountability and improved policing.
Residents were encouraged to continue reporting acts capable of threatening public peace, safety, and confidence in security agencies.
