<blockquote> <blockquote class="pullquote align-left"><span style="color: #800000;">If Nigeria is serious about building a research-driven economy, the country must learn to celebrate not only the birth of brilliant ideas, but also the difficult journey of nurturing, implementing and putting those ideas to work</span></blockquote> </blockquote> By Odunayo Babalola The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Dr. Sonny Echono, has announced plans to expand participation in Nigeria’s 2026 National Research Fair and Exhibition, building on the success of the maiden edition held in November 2024. The 2026 edition is expected to attract a wider range of researchers, inventors, investors, entrepreneurs and industry players, with a stronger focus on turning research outputs into market-ready products and services. Speaking in Abuja in July, while inaugurating the National Research Fair/Exhibition Committee, Echono said participants from the maiden edition would be invited to return with improved technologies and newly developed products to demonstrate the progress they have made. He noted that some innovations showcased at the first edition have already been mainstreamed into the Nigerian market. That sounds promising. But it also raises a question that should not be ignored as another exhibition approaches: How much progress has actually been made since the first one? How many of the innovations showcased in 2024 have moved from exhibition stands into real-world use? Which prototypes became products? While some researchers reportedly secured investors who came on board, the bigger question remains: how many of these innovations have actually reached the people they were designed to serve? To understand why these questions matter, we have to return to November 2024. From Research to Exhibition For five days, from November 17 to 21, researchers, innovators and intellectuals gathered at Eagle Square, Abuja, for the maiden edition of the National Research Fair and Exhibition. The event was presented as an attempt to revamp the Nigerian economy by promoting and investing in groundbreaking research and innovation. But beyond the exhibition stands and research innovations was a bigger question: Can Nigerian research move beyond academic institutions and become practical solutions to the country's challenges? Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, noted that Europe, America and Asia had made progress after embracing the rule of law, free markets and research-based innovation. He stressed that this was the direction Africa and Nigeria needed to take in addressing the numerous challenges facing the continent. He also noted that the Federal Government, through TETFund, would continue to invest in research. Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, said the exhibition was aimed at showcasing research outcomes from the Fund's beneficiary institutions, as well as innovations from both the formal and informal sectors. The goal, he explained, was to connect these innovations with industry for prototype development, scaling and commercialisation. He added that the exhibition was also an effort by the Fund to ensure that researchers and innovators contribute their quota to revamping the country's economy, creating jobs, and generating and redistributing wealth among Nigerians. Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the TETFund Board, Rt. Hon. Aminu Masari, reiterated the Board's commitment to research development in tertiary institutions. He added that the shortage of funds needed to promote cutting-edge research crucial to national development would be significantly addressed under his leadership. <blockquote> <blockquote class="pullquote align-left"><span style="color: #993300;">If the purpose of the 2024 exhibition was to connect research with industry for scaling and commercialisation, then the success of the fair should not only be measured by the number of entries, exhibitors or photographs from the event.</span> <span style="color: #993300;">It should also be measured by the number of innovations that moved from prototypes to products, attracted investment, created jobs or solved real problems</span></blockquote> </blockquote> The promises were big, and the goal was clear: fund research, support innovation and connect ideas with industries that can turn them into practical solutions. The fair opened its doors to innovations across a wide range of sectors, reflecting the different challenges facing Nigeria. Eligible innovations covered agriculture and food security, building and infrastructure, architecture and industrial design, security and defence, aviation and aerospace, computer software, and finance. Researchers and inventors could therefore present technologies aimed at improving food production, strengthening infrastructure, enhancing security, supporting financial institutions and developing digital solutions for national development. The fair also placed emphasis on health, the environment and climate change. Innovations in medicine, pharmaceuticals, biomedical research and healthcare were eligible, alongside products focused on environmental conservation and biodiversity. Technologies addressing desertification, climate change adaptation and mitigation, food safety, food access and increased food production were also encouraged. An “Others” category was included for innovations outside the listed areas but with potential value to national development. The scale of interest was significant. More than 4,000 submissions were reportedly received from universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, research institutes, the military and private innovators. These entries were screened and selected for exhibition, with TETFund showcasing research products, prototypes and innovations with potential for industry adoption and commercialisation. With such a broad range of innovations brought under one roof, the question now is not simply what was exhibited, but what became of those ideas after the exhibition lights went out? Did they attract investors? Did prototypes become products? Did researchers find industry partners? Did patents follow? Did production begin? And, most importantly, did any of these innovations make their way into the hands of the people they were created to serve? The G-Smart Monitor One of the innovations that stood out at the exhibition was the G-Smart Monitor, developed by researchers from the University of Ilorin. The device is an IoT-based system designed to help farmers monitor conditions inside greenhouses in real time through a mobile application. The project was among the teams supported under TETFund's Alliance for Innovative Research (TETFair), where the researchers received technical support and access to facilities at Innov8 Hub in Abuja. According to the University of Ilorin, the support helped the team improve the prototype into a functional product that was considered ready for the market. The exhibition also appeared to open a possible path towards commercialisation for the innovation. The University of Ilorin reported in December 2024 that the research team had secured an investor who was ready to partner with them for large-scale production and marketing of the G-Smart Monitor. However, while this was reported at the time, publicly available information does not clearly show whether the investment eventually materialised, how many units have been produced, or whether the device is currently being sold and used by farmers. This creates an important gap between the promise reported in 2024 and the information currently available about the innovation's progress. The 2.5KVA Fuelless Generator Another innovation that attracted attention was a 2.5KVA fuelless generator, developed by a team led by Prof. Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri of Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara. The generator had been unveiled before the National Research Fair and was among the innovations presented at the 2024 exhibition. Reports on the innovation stated that the prototype was able to operate for up to 21 hours without refuelling, presenting it as a possible response to Nigeria's persistent power challenges and dependence on diesel and other conventional sources of electricity. The innovation had also attracted the interest of the Delta State Government, which announced plans to partner with the Polytechnic on its development. The journey of the generator, however, raises another important question about the transition from prototype to commercial production. Before the exhibition, the research team had indicated that it needed to secure a patent before mass production could begin. By November 2024, reports suggested that the innovation had attracted interest from investors and other organisations, while the Polytechnic continued to work towards protecting and developing the technology. Yet, publicly available reports up to August 2026 do not clearly establish whether the patent was eventually secured, whether mass production began, how many units have been produced, or whether the generator is currently being used commercially. It therefore provides another useful case for examining what happens to Nigerian research after it moves from the laboratory to the exhibition floor—and whether promising prototypes eventually become solutions that people can actually use. Aquaclara: An Eco-Friendly Water Filtration Innovation Another innovation that featured at the 2024 fair was Aquaclara, an eco-friendly modular water-filtration system developed by researchers from Nasarawa State University, Keffi. The innovation was presented by Dr. Taibat Ibrahim, Deputy Director of Incubation and Innovation at the university's Entrepreneurship Development Centre. Designed to address water contamination and improve access to safer water, Aquaclara reflected the fair's focus on encouraging research that responds to practical challenges facing Nigerians. The innovation was among the solutions showcased at the maiden National Research Fair, where researchers were given a platform to present technologies with potential for wider application and commercialisation. For now, available reports confirm its exhibition in 2024 but provide limited information on its progress since then. That makes Aquaclara another case worth following as the second edition of the National Research Fair approaches. If the purpose of the exhibition is to connect research with industry and encourage commercialisation, then tracking innovations such as Aquaclara can help show whether that connection is producing lasting results beyond the exhibition hall. Beyond the Exhibition Hall These three case studies deal with critical areas of the Nigerian economy that demand attention—agriculture, energy and public health. More importantly, they represent innovations developed around real and pressing challenges, with some already described at the time as having potential for market adoption or wider application. Nearly two years after their exhibition, however, publicly available information provides limited evidence of how far some of them have progressed. This does not necessarily mean that the innovations have failed or that no progress has been made. Rather, it raises questions about what happens after promising research is showcased. How consistently are these innovations followed up, monitored, funded and connected to the industries that can help take them to the people? As Nigeria prepares to receive even more ideas at the second edition, the concern is not simply about producing more innovations, but ensuring that the promising ones already developed do not disappear after the exhibition lights go out. Beyond the Applause Perhaps the 2026 National Research Fair will be bigger. Perhaps it will attract more researchers, more inventions and even more promising ideas. That is certainly not a bad thing. TETFund has stated that some innovations from the maiden edition have been mainstreamed into the Nigerian market, while previous participants have been invited to return with improved innovations and newly developed products to demonstrate the progress they have made. But this raises an important question: How much progress has actually been made, and where can Nigerians see it? If the purpose of the 2024 exhibition was to connect research with industry for scaling and commercialisation, then the success of the fair should not only be measured by the number of entries, exhibitors or photographs from the event. It should also be measured by the number of innovations that moved from prototypes to products, attracted investment, created jobs or solved real problems. This is where the conversation around public funding becomes important. Significant public resources are invested in research with the expectation that brilliant ideas will eventually become useful solutions. Researchers deserve to be celebrated for their intellectual work, but celebration should not be the final destination. An innovation does not necessarily become successful simply because it was displayed on an exhibition stand. There should be a clear system for following its journey after the applause: Was the patent obtained? Did an investor come on board? Did production begin? How many people are using the product? What challenges are preventing it from progressing? TETFund's claim that some innovations have entered the market is encouraging. But making these individual success stories more visible would help Nigerians understand the real impact of investment in research. It would also provide researchers and policymakers with useful information about what works, what does not, and where further support is needed. Perhaps, then, the most important feature of the 2026 fair should not simply be how many new innovations Nigeria can display, but how firmly the promising ideas already discovered can be established, supported and put to use. The second edition should be an opportunity to build on the first—not merely by bringing more ideas into the exhibition hall, but by helping brilliant ideas move beyond it. Nigerians should be able to look back at the 2024 exhibition and see a trail of progress: prototypes that became products, researchers who found industry partners, patents that were secured, investments that materialised and solutions that reached communities. Research should not end with an exhibition, and public investment should not end with a press release.
