President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, describing him as a symbol of integrity, courage, and selfless service to Nigeria.
In a personally signed statement released by the State House on Sunday, Tinubu said his “joy knows no bounds” as the foremost Yoruba leader attained the milestone age of 100 on May 11.
The President praised Fasoranti’s contributions to education, democracy, and national development, noting that the centenarian had lived an exemplary life rooted in discipline, honesty, and commitment to noble causes.
According to Tinubu, Fasoranti’s life remains “a metaphor for integrity, honesty, dedicated service to the nation and true leadership.”
He highlighted the elder statesman’s academic accomplishments, including studies at the University of Ibadan, the University of Hull in the United Kingdom, and Maguire University in Sydney, Australia.
Tinubu also commended Fasoranti’s enduring impact in the education sector through his work as a teacher and founder of several schools, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School, and St. Frances’ Academy in Akure.
The President further recalled Fasoranti’s political journey as a loyal disciple of late nationalist leader, Obafemi Awolowo, and a member of the defunct Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria.
He noted that Fasoranti served as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 under the administration of the late Adekunle Ajasin, where his financial prudence and integrity earned widespread respect.
Tinubu praised the nonagenarian’s role during the military era, describing him as one of the leading voices against dictatorship and a strong advocate for democracy and Yoruba unity through the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere.
The President said Fasoranti remained the “only recognised leader” of Afenifere despite internal divisions within the group after the death of the late Abraham Adesanya.
Tinubu also reflected on the personal tragedies Fasoranti endured, including the assassination attempt allegedly linked to the regime of late military ruler, Sani Abacha, as well as the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, by kidnappers in 2019.
Despite the painful experiences, the President said Fasoranti remained steadfast and resilient.
Tinubu expressed gratitude for the elder statesman’s support and prayers throughout his political journey, especially during the 2023 presidential campaign.
He recalled visiting Fasoranti in Akure at the start of his campaign, where the Afenifere leader prayed for his victory and expressed confidence that he would live to witness Tinubu becoming president.
“God answered his prayer through my victory and eventual ascendancy to the top office,” Tinubu stated.
The President prayed for more years of good health for Fasoranti and thanked him for his immense service to Nigeria and continued support for the Renewed Hope Administration.
