The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of veteran Nollywood actor and producer, Solomon Akiyesi, who died in his sleep on Sunday, April 26, 2026.
The National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Abubakar Yakubu, confirmed the development on Monday, April 27, noting that the actor passed away in Abuja.
According to Yakubu, Akiyesi went to bed but did not wake up. His remains have been deposited in a morgue in the Federal Capital Territory as the guild awaits further details from his family.
“Yes, it is true. He died yesterday. He slept and did not wake up. His body is in the morgue in Abuja, where the sad incident happened,” Yakubu said.
A native of Akoko-Edo in Edo State, Akiyesi joined Nollywood in the late 1990s and built a career that spanned more than two decades. He featured in over 100 film productions, earning a reputation as a versatile and dependable character actor.
His notable film credits include Marry Who You Love, Heart of a Saint, Deadly Affair, and Pretty Liars, among others.
Throughout his career, Akiyesi carved a niche for himself in supporting roles, often bringing depth and authenticity to complex characters in family dramas, romantic films, and faith-based productions that resonated with audiences.
Beyond acting, he also ventured into film production, contributing to the steady growth of Nollywood during its formative and expansion years. His consistency and professionalism earned him respect among colleagues and filmmakers alike.
His death marks another significant loss for Nigeria’s film industry, which has in recent years grappled with the passing of several prominent figures.
