The embattled Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hon. Aondona Dajoh, has resigned from his position, a development that has heightened tension within Makurdi, the state capital.
Dajoh submitted a handwritten resignation letter on his official letterhead, dated August 24 and addressed to the Clerk of the House.
The read, “I write to resign my position as the Speaker of the Benue House of Assembly, effective today, August 24, 2025. This is done in good faith and in the best interest of the state.
” I want to appreciate my dear colleagues for the opportunity they gave me to be the first among equals.
“I pledge to remain committed to my duties as a legislator and representative of Gboko West State Constituency.”
The Daily Crucible reports that the Speaker had recently survived an impeachment attempt, prompting him to suspend three lawmakers.
Governor Hyacinth Alia and his loyalists were in a closed-door meeting to pick a replacement for Dajoh while heavily armed soldiers drawn from the 72 Special Battalion were deployed in strategic locations across Makurdi to forestal breakdown of law and order.
Troops were also seen at the Tito railway bypass, the Wurukum roundabout, the commissioner’s quarters and other key points as measures to prevent unrest.
The Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, Terver Zamber, said he was still confirming details with Dajoh at the time of filing this report.
