Amnesty International Laments Women’s Lack Of Protection Against Witchcraft Accusations 

The Amnesty International expressed the worry that this absence of legislative framework leaves Ghanaian women at risk of abuses.

The AI recalled that on July 23, 2020 a 90-year-old woman, Akua Denteh was Lynched in Kafaba, Northern Ghana, after being accused of witchcraft.

The Daily Crucible learnt that the horrifying incident was filmed and circulated online, sparking nationwide outrage.

AI noted that Akua’s tragic death is far from being an isolated case.

“In the north of Ghana, women—especially older women, widowed, poor, unmarried or otherwise non-conforming to stereotypical gender norms —are often accused of witchcraft.

“These accusations are typically triggered by jealousy, illness, or tragic events, and family members are usually the primary accusers. These women are forced into isolated camps where they live in very difficult conditions or otherwise face horrific violence, from beatings, stoning to poisoning.

“It’s time for a change. We must act now to protect these women from further violence and discrimination ensuring that their voices are heard. Let’s urge the authorities to protect older women’s right to life, dignity and security. They should be protected from witchcraft accusations,” Marta Colomer, West and Central Africa Senior Campaigner for AI.
