Amid heightened anxiety and tension fuelled by rising expectations of supporters and nationals of both waring soccer – countries, the Super Eagles advanced to the final of the African Cup of Nations after beating South Africa on penalties on Wednesday night at the Stade de la Paix (Stadium of Peace) in Bouake, Ivory Coast
The Eagles took the lead and raised the hopes of Nigerians home and abroad after skipper William Troost Ekong converted the penalty won by striker Victor Osimhen.
South Africa star player Mokoena equalised in the 90th minute sending the game to extra time, the extra time ended in stalemate and the game advanced to penalties.
Nigeria’s goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali saved two penalties, while Kelechi Iheanacho scored the winning penalty to catapult the Eagles to the final.

Meanwhile, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has described the victory of the Super Eagles over their South African counterparts as well deserved.
Governor Abiodun, in a congratulatory message to the national football team and the entire country, praised the players for their outstanding performance against the South Africans.
The match had ended one apiece after extra time, but the Super Eagles prevailed 4-2 on penalties.
Governor Abiodun expressed delight and pride in the team’s remarkable victory. He commended the players, coaching staff, and the entire Nigerian football fraternity for their dedication and hard work.
“The Super Eagles have once again proven their mettle on the international stage, showcasing their exceptional skills and determination. I am incredibly proud of their achievement in securing a well-deserved spot in the African Cup of Nations finals.
