A 13-year-old JSS 3 student, identified simply as Ademidun, narrowly escaped death on Sunday evening after he was swept away by floodwaters during a heavy downpour at Wole Soyinka area, Ilugun-Itoko, Ajangboun in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The teenager, who is well known in the community as a vegetable hawker, reportedly slipped into a drainage channel while attempting to cross to the other side of the road amid the rainfall.
Eyewitnesses immediately raised the alarm, triggering a frantic rescue effort as residents trooped out in large numbers to search for the boy.
The swift intervention of community leaders, including the Baale and his chiefs, eventually led to his rescue after the rain subsided. Ademidun was later found clinging to a tree inside a nearby canal.
It was gathered that the boy sustained facial injuries and was discovered bleeding and clutching on a tree branch, although the full extent of his injuries could not immediately be confirmed.
A source later disclosed that the teenager is currently responding to treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.
The incident comes at a time when Abeokuta residents are still mourning the death of a former Ogun State Television (OGTV) staff member, who was allegedly murdered in her home by suspected assailants.
