Family, friends, music legends and admirers gathered in Lagos for a colourful and emotional celebration marking the 90th birthday of Pa Benson Idonije — respected music critic, veteran broadcaster, and grandfather of Grammy-winning Afrofusion star.
The glamorous event drew an impressive lineup of dignitaries, celebrities and cultural icons, turning the occasion into a powerful tribute to one of Nigeria’s most influential figures in music history.
As guests arrived in elegant fashion on the red carpet, the evening reflected more than just glitz and glamour. It became a celebration of a remarkable legacy that connects generations of African music greatness — from the pioneering Afrobeat era of to the global success story of Burna Boy.
The Nigerian music superstar delivered an emotional tribute to his grandfather during the lavish celebration marking the elder statesman’s 90th birthday.
The Grammy-winning singer, known for his heartfelt connection to family and heritage, took center stage during the event to honour the man he described as “the greatest man in the world.”
“This is not an ordinary man or an ordinary birthday. This is the greatest man in the world, as far as I’m concerned,” Burna Boy said while raising a toast before guests.
The Afrobeats icon reflected on the immense impact his grandfather has had on both his personal life and the lives of many others, crediting him for laying the foundation for much of their success today.
“This is the reason we have a lot of things we have today. So I’m forever indebted to him and grateful to him,” he continued.
The emotional speech drew applause from family members and guests as Burna Boy expressed appreciation for his grandfather’s lifelong support, guidance and sacrifices.
“So this is just a way of, you know, and I know I’m not the only one, so this is the way for us to come together and celebrate the greatest man in the world on his 90th birthday, even though I think he’s a lot younger,” he added with a smile.
Closing his tribute, the singer thanked his grandfather for shaping the family and serving as a pillar of strength through generations.
“So, thank you very much for being an ally and for creating us and making us what we are right now.”

Pa Idonije holds a unique place in Nigeria’s entertainment and cultural history. Beyond his years as a respected broadcaster and music critic, he also served as the former manager of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti during the formative years of Afrobeat.
