A woman has died on her way to church on Sunday after she fell backward off her husband’s motorcycle at Mobil Petrol Station corridor of Fajol – Obantoko township road, Abeokuta.
It was learnt that while riding on a Bajaj motorcycle with registration number TTN 08 VG along with (3)persons with the husband as the rider, a reckless ride by a another motorcycle triggered loss of control when her husband attempted to avoid a head – on – collision.
The husband, it further gathered, swerved to a side of the road but his wife who apparently wasn’t sitting comfortably was suddenly jolted and in the process, she fell to the ground and died.
The Public Relations Officer of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps(TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the accident on Sunday.
Akinbiyi attributed the cause to reckless riding on the part of the motorcyclist which led to loss of control, and in the process, the woman sitting at the back fell, hit her head on the ground and was presumed dead on the spot.
The TRACE spokesman added that the motorcycle had been moved away from the road by the Police for further investigation while the dead body was taken away by the family.
Akinbiyi stated, “According to eyewitness account, the crash happened when the motorcycle conveying the dead woman, his husband (rider) and child were making their way towards Fajol inbound Obantoko, for the church service of the year.
“In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision with another motorcyclist from an opposite direction, he swerved, and the dead woman, who was also his wife, due to shock and not well balanced in her sitting position, more so that, they were 3 minor riders on the motorcycle, fell on her side and died instantly.
“The body of the dead woman has been taken away by the family for burial at Osiele axis.
“Unfortunately, the other motorcyclist involved in the crash ran away.
“However, the Obantoko Divisional Police Station has taken over the case for more investigation.
“And while we commiserate with the families of the dead woman, motorcyclists are advised to be careful, cautious, patient and avoid excessive speed, particularly at narrow highways, in view of it’s attendant consequences.”
