Unknown bunmen on Friday struck in Imo State on Friday morning, killing five policemen and a couple in the process.
The incident occured at a checkpoint of Okpala junction in the Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, although no formal comment yet from the state police spokesperson, Henry Okoye.
It was learnt that Okoye has not received official report on the attack and the attendant deaths.
According to The Nation, the gunmen killed a couple identified as Mr and Mrs Chinaka Nwagu from Amankwo Okpala community.
Witnesses said the incident, which occurred around 8am, threw residents and passersby in the area into a fit of panic.
Many scampered for safety on hearing gunshots, bringing commercial activities to an abrupt halt.
One of the witnesses said three of the police were shot dead at the scene while the other two, who ran to a nearby shop owned by the couple, were gunned down.
Their attackers also killed a couple who owned the shop they ran into.
The witness claimed that after killing the policemen, the gunmen carted away their five riffles.
The police officers were said to have pulled up at the junction to commence stop-and-search when the gunmen stormed the area and attacked them.
