A renowned social critic and community leader, Chief Toyin Amuzu,TA , has condemned the recent extortion of okada operators in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, describing it as exploitative and a lack of empathy by people in government.
Chief Amuzu, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, said it is still shocking that government in Ogun State has continued to demonstrate acts of insensitivity to the plight of residents labouring to survive the present economic hardship.
According to Amuzu, the allegations of extortion by individuals allegedly empowered by the local government are disturbing and should be thoroughly condemned and investigated.
Media reports had claimed that one individual popularly known as Betterlife, is leading what one disenchanted commercial motorcycle rider called ‘extortion squad’ of individuals reportedly approved by the local government as an agent enforcing the collection of questionable fees ranging from ₦7,000 to ₦15,000 from riders.
The reports had it that these fees are imposed under the guise of documentation and clearance, yet there is no transparency, standardization, or official receipt process to justify such high and variable amounts.
According to the PDP house of Representatives Candidate in Abeokuta South, in the 2023 elections, “It’s obvious that things are hard for our okada operators and they shouldn’t be overburdened with unnecessary levies and extortion,” Chief Amuzu stated.
He warned against the dangers of ethnic tension and urged the local government to take immediate action to address the situation.
“We must not allow the actions of a few individuals to undermine the peace and harmony that we have worked so hard to build in our community,” Chief Amuzu emphasized.
Chief Amuzu called on the Ogun State Commissioner for Transportation and the Abeokuta South Local Government leadership to investigate the allegations and put an end to the extortion.
“The local government must take responsibility for maintaining peace and order in our community and that includes protecting our okada operators from extortion and harassment,”_ Chief Amuzu said.
He urged the okada operators to remain calm and continue to operate their businesses, assuring them that justice will be served.
Chief Amuzu also promised to activate his free fuel social security service he has been doing to support the motorcycle riders and alleviate their sufferings.
“We will give our usual free fuel to assist the riders and we will not sit idly by while our people are being exploited and oppressed,” Chief Amuzu vowed.
