A six-year-old Nigerian girl, Amna Ayomide Bennett, has tragically died after falling from a bedroom window on the 28th floor of an apartment building in Toronto, Canada.
The heartbreaking incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at 200 Chalkfarm Drive, leaving her family devastated and residents of the community in shock.
According to the Toronto Police Service, officers responded to a distress call at the building located near Chalkfarm Drive and Jane Street in the North York area at about 8:15 p.m.
Police spokesperson Amy Davey said authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We do not know exactly how the child fell, but at this time, it does not appear suspicious,” she stated.
The apartment building, managed by Greenwin Property Management, was reportedly constructed in the early 1970s.
Toronto Police Superintendent Jack Gurr disclosed that investigators thoroughly examined the apartment and found no evidence of foul play or malicious intent, though he declined to provide additional details.
A resident of the building, 25-year-old Jahlique James, said she frequently saw the young girl with her family while heading to school in the mornings.
James recalled hearing about the tragedy around 8:45 p.m. before rushing to the lobby, where several shocked residents had gathered.
“You could cut the air. It was eerily quiet,” she said.
Describing the child as cheerful and affectionate, James said Amna loved watching Cocomelon.
She also expressed confusion over how the incident happened, noting that the apartment windows are designed with safety locks to prevent them from opening fully.
According to her, officials had inspected the windows in the building just a week earlier.
“Just knowing now that a child has lost their life, it’s shocking,” she said. “I never thought I would see this happen.”
By Monday morning, there were no visible signs of the tragedy outside the building, as police tape had already been removed from the scene.
“I just hope the community and even the building actually takes notice and does something about it,” James added.
In a statement sent via email, Greenwin spokesperson Stephen Adler said: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our hearts and sympathies are with the child’s family and all others affected.”
