President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved Nigeria’s bid to host the 48th Confederation of African Football (CAF) Ordinary General Assembly and the 2026 CAF Awards Ceremony.
The approval was announced on Tuesday by the Nigeria Football Federation’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, in a statement issued after the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya.
According to Olajire, President Tinubu granted the approval following a meeting with CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, and other top football officials on the sidelines of the summit.
He noted that Nigeria’s selection to host the continental events reflects increasing confidence in the country’s ability to successfully stage major sporting competitions in Africa.
Olajire added that discussions during the meetings centred on football development, sports infrastructure, and strengthening partnerships within African football.
Among those present at the meeting were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, and former NFF President, Amaju Pinnick.
CAF Acting Secretary-General, Samson Adamu, also participated in talks on preparations for upcoming continental football programmes.
The 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly is scheduled for October.
