No fewer than 45,000 people have applied for the 2,000 teaching jobs under the OGUNTEACH Scheme – teacher development cum trainee programme leading to the absorption of successful ones as teachers upon conclusion of exercise.
The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, who revealed this on Wednesday during stakeholders meeting at Lisabi Grammar School Idi Aba ahead of the Monday resumption of school in the state for second term academic session, added that the state government has approved 10,000 scholarships covering the state’s primary, secondary schools and tertiary institutions.
Arigbabu said the move seeks to rejig public education in the state through selection of quality teachers and placing distributing them to place of needs among the 513 state public secondary and 1,654 primary schools in the state.
He explained that beneficiaries of the scholarship scheme shall be based on merit and indigency.
He also explained that the stakeholders meeting which had in attendance security agencies, private school operators, school principals, administrators, head teachers among others was meant to deliberate on what should be done to have safe and secured schools during the second term, given the increasing security challenges in parts of the country.
He emphasized the importance of Learner Identification Number, yearly online updating of the School Census for quick decision making in the areas of planning, security, staffing, and administration.
According to him, security guards will also be engaged to manage the security challenges being faced by schools while also assuring of the government’s determination to improve on the perimetre fence of state – owned public schools.
In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor Dapo Abiodun on Security, retired Assistant Inspector General of Police(AIG), Olusola Subair, urged all school owners to collaborate with the security agencies to keep the schools safe for learning and teaching.
