The Abia State Police Command has arrested two young men for alleged conspiracy, attempted child stealing, assault, and possession of suspected hard drugs following a failed attempt to abduct a two-week-old baby in Olokoro, Umuahia South Local Government Area.
The suspects, identified as 24-year-old Nzubechi Chinagorom and 25-year-old Chinonso Chibundu, both residents of Olokoro, were apprehended through a joint operation involving officers of the Abia State Police Command and members of the Olokoro Community Vigilante.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command revealed that the incident occurred on May 25, 2026, when Chinagorom allegedly entered the residence of Miss Amarachi Chinyereugo, 32, and attempted to forcibly take away her two-week-old baby girl.
Police said the suspect engaged the child’s mother in a violent struggle and allegedly stabbed her with a kitchen knife after she resisted. During the altercation, the infant reportedly fell and hit her head.
Investigators further revealed that Chibundu remained outside the residence, allegedly acting as a lookout while the attempted abduction was underway.
The suspects reportedly fled the scene after the victim raised an alarm but were later tracked down and arrested at a nearby bus stop. Police said they were found taking substances suspected to be hard drugs at the time of their arrest.
The injured mother and her baby were rushed to a hospital, where they received medical treatment and have since recovered.
Police confirmed that exhibits were recovered and that investigations have been concluded at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The suspects are scheduled to be arraigned in court on June 2, 2026.
