The Delta State Police Command has arrested and transferred a police officer to Force Headquarters, Abuja, following the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, has drawn widespread concern, prompting swift action from the police authorities and assurances of justice for the deceased.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, strongly condemned the killing, describing it as a clear case of extra-judicial conduct.
According to the police, operatives attached to Area Command Effurun had acted on intelligence provided by members of the public, indicating that the deceased was apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
The team was deployed to take the suspect into custody. However, the officer leading the operation, identified as ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of Force Order 237 and the Nigeria Police Force’s Standard Operating Procedure, resulting in the suspect’s death.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police ordered the immediate arrest of the officer, who was subsequently transferred to the State Headquarters in Asaba.
He has since been moved to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he is expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for further action, including possible prosecution.
The police command reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law, respect for human rights, and professional conduct, stressing a zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions and misconduct by its personnel.
CP Oyeniyi also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that justice would be pursued diligently.
He urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, noting that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure accountability in the case.
