A loose horse sparked panic and left two pedestrians with minor injuries after it bolted into traffic on a highway in Gona, Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State.
The horse reportedly broke free from its handler or an event area before galloping onto the busy two-lane asphalt road, weaving through passenger motorcycles and commercial tricycles, popularly known as Keke Napep.
Witnesses raised alarm and shouted warnings as the animal raced along the right shoulder of the road.
In the first incident, a man walking away from the road on the left pavement was hit from behind after the horse swerved slightly to avoid a passing motorcycle.
Further along the road, another pedestrian was struck from behind with greater force. The impact sent the man tumbling onto the pavement and scattered some of his belongings.
Videos recorded at the scene showed the horse continuing to run through the area after the two collisions. The condition of the two victims could not be immediately confirmed.
Road safety authorities have yet to comment on the incident, while it remains unclear whether an official investigation will be launched.
The incident has renewed concerns over the dangers posed by stray animals on Nigerian roads. Similar incidents involving cattle and horses have reportedly contributed to accidents on major highways in different parts of the country in recent months.
