Egypt created history by defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties to book their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time ever.
The Pharaohs made a bright start and took the lead in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour found the back of the net, giving the African side an early advantage.
Australia fought back after the break and leveled the score through an unfortunate own goal by Egypt defender Mohammed Hany, setting up a tense finish.
Both teams battled through extra time, with Australia’s goalkeeper producing a string of outstanding saves to keep his side in contention. However, the deadlock remained unbroken, sending the match to a penalty shootout.
Egypt held their nerve from the spot, converting all four of their penalties, while Australia missed two of their attempts as the Pharaohs sealed a memorable 4-2 shootout victory.
The historic triumph makes Egypt only the second African nation to reach the Round of 16 at this World Cup. They will now face either Argentina or Cape Verde for a place in the quarter-finals.
