The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of popular content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, widely known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman who later died after reportedly ingesting a poisonous substance.
Police said the 40-year-old suspect was arrested following a petition alleging that the young woman travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after Ogbonna allegedly invited her under the pretext of offering her training in content creation.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, the suspect had advertised the training programme on his social media platforms, prompting the deceased to accept the invitation.
Edafe alleged that upon her arrival in Asaba, the suspect took the woman to a hotel where he allegedly raped her and physically assaulted her.
He said the victim later returned home traumatised and narrated the incident to her parents.
“In the aftermath of the alleged assault, the deceased made a video recording in which she recounted her experience and the emotional distress she suffered following the incident. She subsequently committed suicide by ingesting a toxic substance and later died despite efforts to save her life,” Edafe said.
Following the petition, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered the Area Command in Effurun to immediately launch a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.
Edafe said detectives acted swiftly on the directive, leading to the arrest of Ogbonna.
He disclosed that the suspect had made “useful statements” during preliminary interrogation, while investigators continue to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the case.
“The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Command Effurun to carry out an immediate and thorough investigation into the allegations.
“Acting on the directive, operatives of the Command swiftly commenced investigation, leading to the arrest of Ifeanyi Ogbonna, also known as ‘Odogwu of Asaba.’ During preliminary investigation, the suspect reportedly made useful statements to the police, while further investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case,” Edafe added.

The police have not announced any formal charges against the suspect, who remains in custody as investigations continue. Under Nigerian law, a suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
