Northwest University, Kano, has wielded the big stick against examination malpractice, expelling 34 students and rusticated another 18 following findings by its Senate Committee on Examination Misconduct.
The sweeping disciplinary measures, approved by the university’s Senate, followed investigations into alleged examination offences committed during the Second Semester of the 2024/2025 academic session.
The decision was contained in a statement issued by the Head of the university’s Public Relations Unit, Abubakar Ibrahim, on behalf of the Registrar, Dr. Isyaku Adamu.
According to the statement, the Senate endorsed the committee’s recommendations at its 66th statutory meeting held on June 17 and 18, 2026, after reviewing cases arising from the semester’s examinations.
“The Senate of the university at its 66th statutory meeting held on Wednesday, 17th and Thursday, 18th June 2026 approved the recommendations of the Senate Committee on Examination Misconduct arising from the Second Semester 2024/2025 Examination,” the statement said.
The university noted that the sanctions were imposed in line with its Examination Regulations as contained in the Students’ Handbook, underscoring its zero-tolerance policy on academic dishonesty.
Apart from the 34 expulsions, the Senate also approved the rustication of 18 students for examination-related offences, while 22 others were handed warning letters after being found culpable of lesser violations.
In a rare reprieve, one student, Rukayya Ahmad Zukuri, was cleared after the Senate reviewed her case and found insufficient grounds to sustain the allegation against her.
The latest disciplinary action ranks among the university’s most significant crackdowns on examination malpractice in recent years and highlights growing efforts by tertiary institutions to protect the integrity of their academic qualifications.
The university urged students to comply strictly with examination rules, warning that anyone found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate sanctions under its regulations.
