When 72-year-old Madam Adijat Fatoki of Oke Itoku speaks of Chief Toyin Amuzu’s free health intervention, her eyes light up with gratitude. For her and many others in Abeokuta South, the outreach has been more than a medical exercise, it has been a lifeline.
“I had been battling constant body pains and dizziness for months,” Madam Adijat recalls. “I didn’t have the money to go for tests or even buy drugs. But when TA’s health programme came to our area, they tested me, diagnosed me and gave me the medicine I needed. They even told me what to do and followed up. Since then, I have been feeling better. May God bless him.”
The Toyin Amuzu Foundation’s free health programme has steadily become a pillar of support, especially for the elderly who often face the double burden of poverty and ill health. During each outreach, medical experts attend to hundreds of residents checking blood pressure, testing for diabetes and screening for common ailments. Those who require drugs receive them at no cost, while more serious cases are referred to major hospitals with additional support provided.
In communities like Oke Itoku, Kuto and Adatan the programme has filled a critical gap. Local leaders say it has reduced preventable illnesses and lifted the financial weight off families struggling to care for their aged parents.
Chief Toyin Amuzu, fondly called TA, has consistently emphasised that health is central to community development.
“When our elderly are healthy, families are stable. And when families are stable, communities thrive,” he often says.
For beneficiaries like Madam Adijat, the intervention is proof that true leadership goes beyond politics. “Even after the elections, he did not stop,” she says softly.
“He continues to care for us. That is why we pray for him always.”
As Nigeria’s healthcare system remains under pressure, initiatives like TA’s provide a glimpse of what compassionate leadership can achieve. In Abeokuta South, the elderly now know they have a friend, not just in words, but in action.
