The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council has accused the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, of pursuing personal political ambitions under the guise of supporting Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The ADC campaign council alleged that Kwankwaso was not genuinely committed to Obi’s political aspirations or the broader opposition effort to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming election.
The Director of Media and Publicity of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Kola Ologbondiyan, made the allegation while reacting to Kwankwaso’s call for the ADC presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, to withdraw from the presidential race in favour of Obi.
Kwankwaso had reportedly disclosed that he appealed to some Fulani groups to persuade Atiku to step down from the contest, a move that has drawn criticism from the ADC campaign council.
In a statement, Ologbondiyan condemned Kwankwaso’s intervention, describing it as reckless and self-serving. He further alleged that the move was designed to serve President Tinubu’s political interests ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
According to the ADC campaign council, Kwankwaso’s call for Atiku to withdraw raises questions about his commitment to building a united opposition capable of challenging the APC.
The council maintained that Kwankwaso’s support for Obi appeared to be motivated more by personal political calculations than by a genuine desire to achieve the opposition’s collective objective.
“Nigerians are not fooled,” Ologbondiyan said, alleging that Kwankwaso’s position reflected personal ambition rather than a sincere commitment to the opposition’s campaign against the ruling party.
The ADC campaign council’s reaction underscores the political tensions surrounding opposition strategies and the question of which candidate should emerge as the leading challenger to Tinubu in 2027.
However, the allegations against Kwankwaso represent the ADC campaign council’s position, and no response from Kwankwaso was included in the statement provided.
