A fatal lone accident has left 11 persons dead after a vehicle plunged off Eruku Bridge along the Ogun State corridor of the Abeokuta-Lagos expressway.
The tragic crash occurred on the night of Sunday, May 10, 2026, according to the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
In a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Route Commander Odunsi Afolabi, the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, said the FRSC rescue team from the Itori Unit Command responded swiftly to the scene following reports of the accident.
The lone crash involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ. The vehicle reportedly somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping all occupants inside after the doors locked on impact.
“All 11 people on board, comprising 10 adult males and one adult female, lost their lives in the crash,” the statement said.
FRSC officials, assisted by members of the local community, had to dismantle parts of the vehicle to recover the victims’ bodies.
The deceased were evacuated to the State Specialist Hospital Morgue in Ifo.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC identified driving under the influence and overloading as the likely causes of the accident.
Reacting to the incident, Ogunjobi urged motorists plying the Abeokuta-Lagos highway to exercise caution, particularly during night travel.
He also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased victims.
The statement read: “The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi , sadly inform the public of the tragic incident of a fatal lone accident at Eruku Bridge along the Abeokuta-Lagos route, which occurred earlier tonight, May 10, 2026. The FRSC rescue team from Itori Unit Command were deployed immediately.
“All 11 people on board (10 adult males and 1 adult female) lost their lives in the crash.
“The Incident: A gold Toyota with registration GGE722KJ somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping the occupants inside as the doors locked upon impact.
“FRSC personnel, with help from the local community, dismantled the vehicle to recover the bodies. The deceased have been moved to the State Specialist Hospital Morgue in Ifo.
“The preliminary report cites Overloading (OVL) as the probable cause.
“The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi advised travelers on the ABK/LAG route to exercise extreme caution, especially when driving at night.
“He however expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.”
