The Senator representing Ogun Central in the 10th Senate, Senator Salisu Shuaib, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, former governorship contestant in the 2019 general elections, Hon. Adekunle Abdul- Kabir Akinlade (Triple A), the Chief Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta, Prof. Adewale Musa Olomu, on Wednesday joined hundreds of professional colleagues, relatives, associates and Muslim community to pay the last to former OGTV Director of Programmes and ex- chairman of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Com. Akeem Akintunde as he bade the world his final goodbye
Also on ground to pay their last honour to the departed veteran journalist were members of the Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC).
Alhaji Akeem Akintunde, a versatile broadcast journalist, sports enthusiast and a unionist passed away on Wednesday night after a protracted illness. His remains were laid to rest at the Muslim Sunnah Cemetery Olomore, Abeokuta on Thursday.
Earlier, Janazah prayer was offered to Allah at the Secretariat Muslim community Mosque, opposite Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Abeokuta on behalf of late Alhaji Akintunde, an incisive sports analyst, who was fondly called ‘Akoko in his life time.
Both at the Secretariat Muslim community Mosque and Sunnah Cemetery Olomore, grieving colleagues, friends, sympathizers and well-wishers, including Senator Salisu Shuaib and Professor Abayomi Arigbabu prayed for the repose of Akintunde’s soul.
They also called on the Almighty Allah to show the deceased mercy, forgive his shortcomings and grant the loved ones he left behind the strength and wisdom to handle the trying moment.

Meanwhile, Governor Dapo Abiodun has described the death of Akeem Akintunde, as a major loss to the state and the media industry.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta on Thursday, Abiodun hailed the late Akintunde as a distinguished, thoroughbred media professional and accomplished manager whose commitment to duty was exceptional.
The Governor noted that even while battling serious health challenges, including kidney-related ailments, Akintunde remained resourceful, diligent, and deeply devoted to his work, particularly in sports broadcasting where he built an enduring legacy.
He described the late broadcaster as warm, pleasant, and highly respected among colleagues, adding that his passing after a prolonged illness marked the end of a remarkable career defined by excellence, passion, and professionalism.
“As a media professional, Alhaji Akeem Akintunde was an outstanding personality — pleasant to be with and completely dedicated to his job. He was a manager of managers, a mentor to many, and a shining light in journalism and sports reporting,” the governor said.
“His passage marks the end of a remarkable career built on dedication, excellence, and unwavering commitment to the profession.”
The governor extended his heartfelt condolences to Akintunde’s family, friends, and the entire OGTV community, describing the late broadcaster as a gem whose absence would be deeply felt.
“We have lost a source of joy, professionalism, and inspiration. May Almighty Allah grant him Aljannah Firdaus and comfort all those he left behind,” Abiodun added.
