The Katsina State Government has announced the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while being held captive by bandits.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, the government described the development as a tragic loss to the state and the nation.
According to the statement, the retired army officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while in captivity, despite sustained efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure his release.
“The Katsina State Government, with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss, wishes to inform the general public of the tragic passing of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar,” the statement said.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy.”
The government noted that the late general’s abduction and subsequent death represent not only a devastating loss to his family and Katsina State but also a significant loss to Nigeria.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and the nation, describing the incident as a dark moment and a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges facing communities across the country.
The governor called for a united and intensified effort to combat banditry and other forms of criminality threatening peace and stability in the region.
“The Governor has described this incident as a dark moment and a reminder of the urgent need for a collective and intensified front against the criminal elements threatening the peace of our communities,” the statement added.
Radda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the abduction are brought to justice.
He also assured residents that the state government remains resolute in its determination to eradicate banditry and safeguard lives and property across Katsina State.
The government extended its sympathies to the family of the deceased and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.
