Peddling Political Speculation as Classified Information: Atiku’s $1.2m Washington Lobbying Gamble Exposed

Nigerians are no longer naive spectators easily swayed by rented international mouthpieces or imported falsehoods. A political movement that relies on foreign lobbyists to manufacture phantom crises has fundamentally forfeited its moral authority to lead

By Sunday Dare

The coordinated media blitz orchestrated around a Washington, D.C. advisory firm is not an intelligence breakthrough; it is a clinical demonstration of desperation.

The bankruptcy of Atiku’s 2027 political agenda is writ-large in the unmasking of the lobby firm he hired. Strip away the hyperbolic prose, the counterfeit urgency, and the grandiose invocations of classified espionage, and what remains is a textbook transactional hit job.

At its core, the theatrical dispatches issued by Dr. Karl-Marx Edward Okeke-Von Batten—a commercial lobbyist operating under a lavish, multi-million-dollar retainer funded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Findings under
Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) expose the intellectual and political bankruptcy of an Atiku l-led opposition desperately seeking foreign validation for local irrelevance.

The Nigerian connection is exposed directly from the names found on the lobby documents. The incendiary press releases being carefully churned out from Washington are public relations propaganda sheets passed off as the view of the U.S. Government. They are not.

Sane minds must categorically dismiss these reports as fabricated, politically motivated, and entirely unsupported by evidence. The report presents no intelligence document, no named Western official, and no evidence of any exchange involving Nigeria’s secrets or resources.

It is nothing more than political speculation packaged as classified information. We demand that they produce the so-called “highly classified intelligence report,” identify their unnamed sources, and provide tangible evidence for their wild allegations.

…an electoral mandate is won on the battleground of verifiable domestic performance, national vision, and tangible infrastructure, not through imported soundbites purchased with millions of dollars in search of an elusive political resurrection

To evaluate these claims with legal rigor and logical integrity requires examining the architecture of this political stunt. Publicly verifiable United States Department of Justice FARA filings confirm that Atiku Abubakar contracted the Washington-based firm Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C. on a lucrative $1.2 million, 12-month retainer.

The explicit scope of this agreement is not to offer objective governance advisory, but to execute a targeted, partisan campaign designed to “counterbalance” Nigerian government narratives and weaponize historical, legally resolved judicial archives for domestic political leverage ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Okeke-Von Batten must have conned a desperate Alhaji Abubakar Atiku into believing that he has access to everyone in the Trump administration, including President Trump himself, by falsely representing that he had reached out to President Trump to release the so-called FBI files.

He has absolute zero to do with what is playing out in the U.S. court system. The case has been active since 2023, and the FBI’s main concern is simply the protection of the techniques by which it gathers information and the safety of its sources. We dare him to reach out to the judge in charge of the case—he’ll be buying himself serious charges of judicial obstruction.

The self-bestowed appellation of “Senior Government Advisor” is a linguistic sleight of hand. Fact-checking and official FARA documents reveal that Dr. Karl-Marx Edward Okeke-Von Batten—who has also gone by the aliases Ikemefuna Okeke, Karl Von Batten, and Dr. Karl-Marx Edward Okeke-Von Batten III; a U.S.-based consultant of Nigerian origin who added the “Von Batten” surname following his marriage to Elizabeth Von Batten—is a commercial lobbyist and the founder of Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C.

Speculations that he operates as a gun-for-hire whose professional survival depends entirely on generating manufactured controversies for foreign principals who pay for volume and sensationalism are rife. Projecting a commercial lobbyist as an objective geopolitical arbiter from Nigeria is an insult to the intelligence of the Nigerian electorate.

Dr. Karl Von Batten’s comments represent solely the position of an individual associated with Atiku-linked political interests, not the U.S. government or President Trump.
This orchestrated distraction attempts to tie the President’s movements to foreign legal proceedings, but the facts are clear: President Tinubu is on a previously scheduled annual leave, and there is absolutely no connection between the President’s European trip and the ongoing U.S. FOIA proceedings.

The report’s falsehoods, contradictions, anonymous claims, and total absence of documentary evidence expose its fraudulent foundation. The recycled fixation on decades-old, settled U.S. legal filings represents a classic exercise in legal opportunism.

This dynamic was further exposed during recent public discourse, notably when Wole Afolabi, SAN, appeared on Channels Television to address ongoing FOIA requests seeking the release of historical archival records held by federal agencies. As Afolabi rightly clarified, actions taken by the legal team to withhold certain sections align strictly with U.S. legal provisions designed to protect confidential investigative processes, rather than any attempt to shield the president from damaging details.

He emphasized the core reality: if the president had been criminally liable under U.S. law during past investigations, American authorities would have indicted and prosecuted him at the time. Competent jurisdictions and independent regulatory frameworks operate on facts, due process, and established jurisprudence—not on the recycled press releases of political mercenaries conducting judicial safaris from foreign capitals.

Let the American judiciary and law enforcement agencies execute their statutory mandates without partisan interference, exactly as they have always done. This multi-million-dollar external distraction serves a singular, defensive purpose: to draw public attention away from the glaring absence of a coherent domestic agenda.

The opposition’s 2027 framework remains devoid of noble economic blueprints, structural innovation, or issue-based engagement. Having offered no ideological alternative to the difficult, necessary macroeconomic stabilization policies undertaken by President Bola Tinubu’s administration—opting instead for a hypocritical, populist somersault on critical structural reforms like fuel subsidy removal—the architects of this campaign are left with nothing to trade upon but muckraking, emotional manipulation, and ethnic polarization.

When a political camp invests millions not into building grassroots infrastructure, agricultural masterplans, or industrial blueprints, but into hiring foreign mouthpieces to manufacture fictitious crises, they confirm their detachment from the everyday realities of ordinary Nigerians. The opposition’s strategy relies on the cynical gamble that repetition of a lie will birth a truth, weaponizing foreign addresses to mask an absolute deficit of domestic vision.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration continues to lay the foundational blocks for sustainable national development through difficult fiscal discipline, infrastructural consolidation, and institutional security reforms.

As underscored by the reality that upcoming political cycles will be decided by campaigns and performance promises made directly to the Nigerian electorate—not by contested historical documents—these are metrics of statecraft that cannot be undermined by paid PR theatricals or transatlantic mercenaries attempting to rewrite the political calendar from abroad.

True democratic validation is earned through the ballot box and tangible service delivery to the citizens at home, not through manufactured headlines bought and paid for in foreign currency. An opposition that avoids robust, issue-based policy debate in favor of external proxy theatrics demonstrates that it possesses neither the stomach nor the strategy to govern a progressive nation.

Nigerians are no longer naive spectators easily swayed by rented international mouthpieces or imported falsehoods. A political movement that relies on foreign lobbyists to manufacture phantom crises has fundamentally forfeited its moral authority to lead.

True leadership is forged in the crucible of domestic accountability, visionary economic planning, and steadfast commitment to national sovereignty—none of which can ever be outsourced to Washington consultants or purchased with millions of dollars in desperate political maneuvering.

President Bola Tinubu’s unequaled administrative reforms and commitment to national revitalization cannot be blighted by weaponized foreign lobby scripts. Nigerians see through the fog of paid propaganda: an electoral mandate is won on the battleground of verifiable domestic performance, national vision, and tangible infrastructure, not through imported soundbites purchased with millions of dollars in search of an elusive political resurrection.
