The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Saturday, summoned courage to wield the big stick on some members, expelling former Governor of Rivers State and current Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, from the party for allegedly working consistently against its interest.
The PDP also expelled former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose; ex – National Secretary of the party, Samuel Anyanwu; former National Legal Adviser of the party, Kamaldeen Adeyemi Ajibade (SAN); Austin Nwachukwu, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa; George Turner and Umar Bature for conduct injurious to the health of the party.
The party the mesure would sanitise the party and purge it of ‘some characters’ working against its interest.
Former Deputy National Chairman of the party and leader of the party in Lagos State, Chief Olabode George, moved the motion for the expulsion of Wike, Fayose and others during the party’s 2025 National Convention at the Adamasingba Stadium, Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
Over 3,000 delegates, governors, National Executive Committee members, Board of Trustees (BoT) members, and party stakeholders from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory graced the historic event.
The two-day convention, which runs November 15–16, would lead to the election of a new National Working Committee, including a National Chairman, tasked with steering the party toward the 2027 general elections.
However, the expulsion of the erring members was ratified immediately amid jubilation within the stadium and beyond.
George declared that the decision came on the heels of various activities they engaged in aimed at undermining the party.
Earlier, the Secretary of the National Convention Organising Committee, Senator Ben Obi, had put the question to the delegates on whether or not the convention should be an Elective Convention and also raised a motion to make it an Elective Convention, with Mr Emmanuel Enoidem, SAN seconding the motion.
Similarly, Governor Seyi Makinde moved a motion for the ratification and confirmation of Executive Committees and Structures in states, which were produced through congresses at all levels that were in compliance with the party’s constitution and monitored by INEC and security agencies, exempting Imo, Abia, Enugu and Rivers states.
Mr Daniel Obiechina Okechukwu seconded the motion.
The convention also moved a motion to dissolve the current National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, while it equally moved the motion for the amendment of some sections of the party’s constitution.
