Eyewitnesses said chaos erupted when some students suddenly developed breathing difficulties and other health complications believed to be linked to exposure to a toxic substance in the area.
The affected students were rushed to the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode for emergency treatment as medical personnel and emergency responders battled to contain the situation.
The incident triggered fear across the community, with worried parents and guardians rushing to various schools in Ijebu-Ode to withdraw their children over safety concerns.
Residents who expressed anxiety over the development called on relevant authorities to immediately investigate the source of the suspected toxic gas and take urgent steps to prevent further exposure.
As of the time of filing this report, appropriate agencies of the Ogun State government had yet to issue an official statement confirming the cause of the incident or the exact number of students affected.
The Daily Crucible reports that the latest incident is the second time that such suspected gas leak would hit schools in Ijebu – Ode in less than two months.
When the first episode occurred, many of the students experienced breathing difficulties with no fewer than 21 hospitalized at the time at the State General Hospital Ijebu – Ode.
Parents and the school are lamenting that the second incident occurred because the state government took no necessary and sufficient steps to identify the source, cause and find lasting solution to it.
