What should have been the beginning of a new chapter in the life of 25-year-old businessman Lovely Chukwulobelu turned into a drug trafficking case at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
Chukwulobelu, who had returned to Nigeria to get married, was arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the airport while allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine to Portugal.
According to the NDLEA, the newlywed was intercepted at the departure hall of the Enugu airport on Thursday, September 25, 2026, as he prepared to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Portugal through Addis Ababa.
He was allegedly carrying the cocaine inside his body, even as the wedding ring on his finger offered a stark reminder that he had only recently begun married life.
Following his arrest, Chukwulobelu was placed under excretion observation. The NDLEA said he subsequently egested a total of 72 wraps of cocaine.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that he had previously operated a car-decoration business at the Trade Fair Complex in the Ojo area of Lagos before relocating to Portugal in May 2023.
He returned to Nigeria recently for his wedding, which took place on September 13, 2026.
But barely two weeks after exchanging marital vows, his journey back to Portugal was interrupted at the airport, according to the anti-narcotics agency.
In his account to NDLEA officials, Chukwulobelu allegedly said he turned to drug trafficking to help offset expenses incurred during his wedding.
The circumstances surrounding his arrest highlight how financial pressures can intersect with dangerous criminal decisions, with the newlywed now facing the consequences of allegedly transporting a Class A illicit drug.
The NDLEA has not indicated the final legal outcome of the case. Further investigation is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged trafficking attempt and any other persons who may have been involved.
