Nigeria – born Amos Dangut has assumed office as Registrar and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), becoming the 14th person to occupy the position since the regional examination body was established.
Dangut officially began his five-year tenure on October 1, 2026, succeeding Pateh Bah of The Gambia.
A statement announcing his assumption of office was issued by Demianus Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at the WAEC Headquarters in Accra, Ghana.
Dangut’s appointment, which runs from October 2026 to September 2031, was ratified by the WAEC International Governing Board at its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra in March 2026.
Before his elevation to the regional position, Dangut headed WAEC’s National Office in Nigeria, a role he assumed on October 2, 2023.
Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut has an extensive academic background spanning agriculture, animal science and education administration. He holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science in Animal Science, a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.
His career in education began in 1994 at St Louis College, Jos, where he worked as a WAEC examiner. Four years later, he joined the council as a staff member.
Over the years, Dangut held several positions across WAEC’s operations, including Assistant Registrar/Subject Officer in the Test Development Division at the council’s Ogba office in Lagos.
The WAEC new CEO later served as Senior Assistant Registrar and Head of Examinations Security, as well as Deputy to the Branch Controller at WAEC’s Uyo and Bauchi branch offices. He subsequently became Senior Assistant Registrar/Branch Controller at the Yola Branch Office.
His other appointments included Deputy Registrar/Controller of the Post Examinations Department, Deputy Registrar/Zonal Coordinator at the Ikeja Zonal Office and Deputy Registrar in the Office of the Head of National Office.
WAEC said Dangut’s more than two decades of experience with the council had equipped him with expertise in test development, examination administration, post-examination activities and the management of branch and zonal offices.
The council emphasized his use of information and communications technology to modernise examination processes and improve efficiency.
“Throughout his career, Dangut has demonstrated integrity, transparency, diligence, and a strong commitment to service,” WAEC said.
His professional record, according to the council, has received recognition over the years. The Nigeria Examinations Committee commended him for his handling of examination matters between 2000 and 2006, while the Ondo State Government and Akoko South Local Government presented him with an Award for Meritorious Service during his National Youth Service Corps programme.
As Head of WAEC’s National Office in Nigeria, Dangut served on the governing boards of several education-related institutions, including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and Grange Educational Foundation.
He also represented WAEC at major education policy platforms, including the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.
During his tenure as Head of the National Office, Dangut oversaw a number of initiatives aimed at improving examination delivery, security, integrity and operational efficiency.
Among the initiatives were the rollout of Computer-Based WASSCE, the serialisation of examination question papers and the introduction of a Digital Electronic Marking System.
He also supervised the implementation of the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform and Digital Records Archive, alongside technology-driven systems for examination logistics, timetable management and monitoring examiners’ attendance.
WAEC described Dangut as an astute scholar with publications in both national and international journals. He has also delivered keynote addresses and presented academic papers at conferences in Nigeria and abroad.
He currently serves as the West African sub-region’s Regional Representative on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.
With his assumption of office, Dangut becomes the latest Nigerian to lead the regional examination body and begins a five-year mandate running through September 2031.
