The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, who was found dead in a hotel room in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
Uwuigbe, a lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, reportedly died on Monday, October 5, 2026, after checking into the hotel and reportedly engaging the services of a 21-year-old woman, identified by the police as Angela Defa Jacob.
The circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death remain unclear, with the police investigating events leading up to the discovery of his body.
According to the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the police received a report at about 8pm on Monday that Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel with the woman.
Ikoedem said that, at some point, the lecturer asked Jacob to leave the room to purchase water for him.
However, upon her return, the woman reportedly found Uwuigbe lying motionless in the room and raised the alarm, prompting the involvement of the police.
Following the report, police arrested the hotel owner, manager and the 21-year-old woman as part of efforts to establish what happened before the lecturer’s death.
The police, however, have not disclosed a cause of death, and there is no indication that any of those arrested has been found responsible for the lecturer’s death.
“The woman returned to the room and discovered Uwuigbe lying lifeless, prompting the report to the police,” Ikoedem said.
The police spokesperson said the investigation was ongoing and that detectives were working to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Uwuigbe’s remains have since been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary for preservation, pending the outcome of the investigation and further procedures to determine the cause of death.
