The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians to the circulation of a suspected counterfeit toothpaste being marketed as the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste.

The agency, in Public Alert No. 041/2026, said the suspected counterfeit product, identified as ORACIRE+ Toothpaste, is being distributed in Nigeria and closely resembles the genuine ORACARE+ Toothpaste in its packaging, design and overall presentation.

NAFDAC said the alert followed a formal complaint and market intelligence report indicating widespread distribution of the suspected counterfeit product.

According to the agency, its market surveillance team discovered the product at Ojuwoye Market in Mushin, Lagos, where its close resemblance to the registered product made it difficult for consumers to distinguish the suspected counterfeit from the genuine toothpaste.

NAFDAC warned that counterfeit personal-care products could fail to meet established quality and safety standards, potentially exposing consumers to health risks.

The agency said the origin, composition, safety and quality of the suspected counterfeit ORACIRE+ Toothpaste have not been verified.

“Consumers are advised to exercise caution when purchasing ORACARE+ Toothpaste,” NAFDAC said, urging the public to buy toothpaste and other regulated products only from reputable and authorised outlets.

The agency also advised consumers to carefully inspect product packaging and verify the source of products before making purchases.

NAFDAC said it has commenced surveillance activities following the discovery and has directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to investigate the availability and distribution of the suspected counterfeit product in their respective areas.

The officials have also been instructed to take appropriate regulatory action where the product is found.

The agency urged distributors, retailers, consumers and healthcare providers to remain vigilant and report any suspected sale or distribution of the product.
