The Rivers State Police Command has arrested hotel workers and a group of friends following the death of a guest, Okorite Charles, who d!ed under controversial circumstances at a hotel in Port Harcourt.
Charles, believed to be in his mid-20s, reportedly d!ed after he was allegedly pushed from an upper floor of the facility while lodging with friends earlier this week.
Confirming the incident, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Karbolo, said the hotel’s operations had been suspended pending the conclusion of investigations.
According to her, the victim was rushed to a hospital where a medical doctor confirmed him dead on arrival.
“The victim’s friends came to the hotel and commenced a protest, which attracted a crowd and threatened to disrupt the peace of the area,” Karbolo stated.
“Upon receipt of the information, police operatives promptly mobilised to the scene and successfully brought the situation under control, preventing further breakdown of law and order.
“The hotel staff on duty at the time of the incident, as well as the victim’s friends who were present with him, were arrested for questioning and investigation into the circumstances surrounding the d3ath.”
She added that the hotel would remain closed until detectives establish what transpired.
The incident has, however, taken a new twist as the deceased’s brother, Mr. Obomate, alleged foul play.
Obomate claimed that a doctor at the hospital where Charles was taken observed what appeared to be a stab wound on his stomach. He also alleged that the family suspected the deceased might have been struck on the neck with an object.
Police say investigations are ongoing to determine whether the death resulted from a fall, an assault, or both.
The command has urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the law to take its course.
