The Nigerian Army has taken a major step toward strengthening its strategic planning and operational readiness with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art Wargaming Centre at the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN), Abuja.
The facility, unveiled on Thursday by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, is expected to enhance the military’s ability to anticipate emerging threats, test operational concepts and develop innovative responses to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
Located within the Army War College in Asokoro, the new centre represents a significant investment in professional military education and institutional capacity building, reinforcing the Army’s drive to develop a highly professional, adaptive and combat-ready force.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Lieutenant General Shaibu described the facility as a strategic asset designed to sharpen decision-making and operational planning at the highest levels of military leadership.
According to the Army Chief, modern security threats are increasingly complex and require commanders who possess not only battlefield experience but also the intellectual agility and strategic insight needed to make critical decisions under pressure.
He noted that wargaming has become an indispensable military tool worldwide, enabling commanders to simulate conflict scenarios, evaluate strategic options and identify potential vulnerabilities before actual operations are conducted.
“The contemporary security environment demands leaders who can think ahead, anticipate threats and develop effective responses to complex situations,” he said.
The COAS emphasized that the centre would serve as a hub for operational experimentation, strategic analysis and joint planning, providing military professionals with a platform to examine national security challenges through realistic simulations and evidence-based assessments.
He also acknowledged the contributions of previous Army leadership whose vision laid the foundation for the project and commended the leadership of the Army War College for proactively developing wargaming expertise through engagements with allied military institutions.
Earlier, the Commandant of the Army War College Nigeria, Major General Umar Alkali, described the centre as a transformative capability that will elevate strategic-level training and operational research within the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
He explained that the facility is equipped to support both manual and computer-assisted wargames, allowing participants to test campaign plans, assess force employment concepts and examine alternative courses of action in realistic operational environments.
Of particular significance is the centre’s ability to integrate land, maritime, air, cyber and information operations into unified training scenarios, a capability expected to strengthen interoperability and jointness among the services.
Beyond military education, the facility is designed to support doctrine development, concept validation and strategic-level analysis, making it a critical resource for future force development and national security planning.
The newly commissioned complex comprises two large wargaming halls, four exercise rooms, three theatre laboratories, ten syndicate rooms, a conference room, a library, a digital server room and other supporting infrastructure.
Military analysts view advanced wargaming as an essential component of modern defence planning, enabling armed forces to prepare for emerging threats ranging from conventional warfare and counterinsurgency operations to cyber attacks and hybrid conflicts.
With the establishment of the new Wargaming Centre, the Nigerian Army is positioning itself to better understand future battlefields, refine operational strategies and support the attainment of Nigeria’s broader national security objectives.
As security challenges continue to evolve across the region, the facility is expected to become a key strategic hub for developing the next generation of military leaders and shaping the Army’s response to tomorrow’s threats.
