The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State on Sunday set the stage for a major political showdown in 2027 as Hon. Oladipupo O. Adebutu emerged as the party’s consensus governorship candidate, declaring that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) must be voted out of power.
This comes barely two days after Senator Solomon Adeola (APC, Ogun West), the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged as the party’s governorship ticket for the 2027 election following a direct primary election conducted across the 236 wards of the state.
However, speaking during his acceptance speech shortly after clinching the PDP governorship ticket a the primary conducted within the premises of Abeokuta Sports Club which had in attendance, ex – governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, Adebutu described his emergence as “historic” and thanked party leaders, stakeholders, and members for unanimously backing him as the PDP flag bearer for the next governorship election.
The PDP candidate revisited the controversial 2023 governorship election, insisting that the opposition party won at the polls but was allegedly denied victory through manipulation.
“We believe we won in 2023 through your votes but were denied through manipulation. However, this time in 2027, I believe in God that your votes will count and will put me in office as your duly elected Governor,” he declared.
In a direct attack on the APC, Adebutu accused the ruling party of plunging Ogun State into hardship despite over 15 years in power under different political structures.
He described the APC administration as “clueless,” alleging that the state had remained under “siege” while residents continued to suffer economic and social challenges.
According to him, Ogun State possesses enormous natural and human resources but lacks visionary leadership capable of transforming its potential into prosperity for the people.
“Our collective responsibility now should be focused on returning our party to the seat of power in Oke-Mosan in order to rescue our people from suffering and maladministration,” he said.
Adebutu called on PDP members to remain united and peaceful, stressing that internal harmony would be crucial to defeating the APC in the next election cycle.
He also commended party aspirants who stepped down for consensus arrangements, saying their sacrifices demonstrated loyalty to the party’s future.
“There is no loser among us; we have all won for the party and for the good people of Ogun State,” he added.
The PDP governorship candidate assured supporters that the party would soon unveil its policy direction and governance blueprint for Ogun State ahead of the 2027 election.
The gathering ended with loud chants of “PDP Power!” and “Power to the People!” as supporters celebrated what party leaders described as the beginning of a united push to reclaim power in Ogun State.
