Panic gripped residents of Mussa village in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State after suspected Boko Haram insurgents stormed a Primary and Junior Secondary School, with several students feared abducted during the attack.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday, May 15, shortly after military personnel stationed in the area left the town.
According to Daily Trust, villagers said the heavily armed insurgents arrived in large numbers on motorcycles and forcefully invaded the school premises, causing chaos as students and residents fled for safety.
A resident of the community, who claimed that many pupils were taken away by the attackers, said: “Yes, the attack happened early hours of today (Friday) and it was discovered that many children were abducted.”
The Deputy Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Askira, confirmed the attack but said details surrounding the alleged abduction were still unclear.
“Details of the attack are sketchy, but the information at my disposal has it that many of the students fled into the bush, but I don’t have details of those abducted. This signifies that the attackers were spying on the movement of troops before they struck,” he said.
Security operatives are yet to issue an official statement on the incident as fears grow over the safety of the missing students.
