The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a state-issued driver’s licence in partnership with the Federal Government as part of efforts to strengthen road safety and improve traffic regulation across the state.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Monday during the 2025 ministerial press briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja.
Osiyemi said the proposed initiative would allow motorists to choose between the existing federal driver’s licence and the new Lagos State-issued licence once the scheme becomes operational.
According to him, the move is aimed at improving compliance with traffic regulations, enhancing safety standards and simplifying the licensing process for motorists across the state.
He added that the new arrangement would also help reduce delays often associated with driver’s licence applications and renewals under the current system.
Giving an update on licensing activities, the commissioner revealed that 56,876 driver’s licences were processed during the review period. The figure comprised 27,067 fresh applications and 29,810 renewals carried out in collaboration with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps.
He further disclosed that 1,158 international driver permits were issued within the same period.
On rail transportation, Osiyemi said the first phase of the Lagos Blue Line Rail transported about 3.5 million passengers in 2025.
He noted that the second phase of the Blue Line extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko is expected to be completed and fully operational by the first quarter of 2027.
Speaking on the Lagos Red Line Rail, the commissioner said the state government had acquired 24 additional train coaches arranged in three sets of eight-coach trains to improve passenger operations along the corridor.
Osiyemi also disclosed that work had intensified on the proposed 68-kilometre Lagos Green Line Rail project, designed to connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah and Sangotedo.
