The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actress and director Oby Kechere, widely remembered for her role as “Ms Koi Koi” in the 2002 classic Aki na Ukwa.
The sad news was confirmed by the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) in an official statement.
According to the guild, Kechere passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026, after a prolonged illness.
In the statement signed by the DGN’s Director of Communications, Uche Agu, the guild expressed deep grief over her passing.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere. On behalf of the National Executive Council and the entire DGN family, I extend my deepest condolences to her family and loved ones,” the statement read in part.
Kechere, whose career took off in the early 2000s, carved a niche for herself as both a talented actress and a respected filmmaker. She gained nationwide recognition for her memorable portrayal in Aki na Ukwa, a role that endeared her to audiences and cemented her place in Nollywood history.
Beyond her on-screen success, she was known within the Abuja filmmaking community for her strong commitment to professional ethics and her passion for mentoring younger creatives.
Her death marks a significant loss to the Nigerian movie industry, where she was regarded as both a creative force and a guiding figure to many.
She is survived by family members, colleagues, and a generation of filmmakers she inspired. May her soul rest in peace.
