Oniroyin Support Initiative, a registered, not-for-profit, humanitarian and non-governmental organisation, will on Thursday, 30th April, 2026, hold its second Empowerment Programme for Journalists in Ogun State.

The event, expected to draw important dignitaries within and beyond the media community, is scheduled to take place at the Basic Trust International, beside ProvidusBank, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta by 12.00noon.

A press statement jointly signed by Comrade Olufunke Fadugba and Comrade Adekunle Olayeni, Chairman and Secretary Board of Trustees (BOT) of the organisation respectively, indicated that the event was in honour of the OSI Convener, Comrade Ambassador Tunde Oladunjoye, who passed on at the age of 58 on April 4, 2025.

The release disclosed that the empowerment programme will feature the public presentation of cheques and grants to select beneficiaries towards ensuring their continued well-being. Also, free medical check-up, including consultations, screenings, medications and referrals, for journalists and invited families of deceased journalists is one of the key highlights of the event.

According to the organisers, prominent real estate entrepreneur and Chief Executive Officer of Pelican Valley Nigeria Ltd, Ambassador (Dr) Babatunde Adeyemo, will chair the occasion while the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Ogun State Governor, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, will deliver a keynote address.

Notable among the personalities expected at the event include the Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya; Chief (Mrs.) Bola Obasanjo, the wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and a former Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Remmy Hazzan.

Goodwill messages from dignitaries and civil society groups as well as testimonials from families of deceased journalists are also part of the lined-up activities.

It is instructive to note that OSI is an organisation dedicated to providing financial support to journalists and families of deceased journalists as well as media professionals battling chronic health challenges.

“With the input of distinguished media professionals, our late Convener berthed the idea in his quest to give back to his primary constituency — journalism!,” the press statement said.

“A year after his passing, our Convener’s vision of a social safety net for media practitioners remains the heartbeat of this non-governmental organisation. To honour his memory, and in continuation of our set goals, therefore, OSI is hosting this special outreach programme designed to provide direct financial/material relief to those within the journalism community who need it most. This edition is the second outing of the Initiative.”

Oniroyin Support Initiative was founded to support economic and health stability of journalists and help families of deceased journalists in terms of emotional, financial and possible job opportunities to sustain professional relevance of journalism.

The organisation was also established to provide sundry support as may be required to promote the value of journalists and the profession in the society.
