The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has alerted Nigerians to brace for thunderstorms, gusty winds and possible disruptions to daily activities across the country on Monday.
In its weather outlook released on Sunday, the agency said hot and sunny conditions would prevail in the morning hours, before giving way to isolated thunderstorms later in the day.
These storms, it noted, may be accompanied by strong winds and brief atmospheric disturbances, particularly in parts of the northern region, including Taraba State.
NiMet stated that central states would experience a similar pattern, with calm and warm morning conditions expected to transition into thunderstorms as the day progresses.
It warned that while some areas may receive rainfall, others could witness strong winds without significant precipitation, advising residents to plan outdoor activities early. States likely to be affected include Niger, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory.
The agency added that southern states would see more intense storm activity later in the day. Areas such as Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Enugu, Anambra, Rivers and Delta are expected to experience wet conditions, lightning and possible disruptions to outdoor engagements.
NiMet also issued safety advisories, warning that strong winds may precede rainfall and urging residents to secure loose objects. Motorists were advised to drive cautiously due to reduced visibility and slippery roads, while the public was cautioned to avoid flood-prone areas during heavy rainfall.
It further warned of possible lightning strikes, advising people to seek shelter during storms, and urged airlines to obtain airport-specific weather reports from the agency to ensure safe operations.
