Former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rejoin the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Shekarau announced the move on Sunday at his residence on Mundubawa Avenue in Kano, flanked by supporters and party loyalists. He defected alongside Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, a PDP chieftain.
Explaining the decision, Shekarau said it came after extensive consultations and a careful review of political options.
“We have weighed all the options and arrived at this collective resolution,” he said, inviting dissenting views from his supporters.
The announcement came just hours after he formally resigned from the PDP in a letter dated April 19, 2026, addressed to his ward chairman in Giginyu, Nassarawa LGA of Kano State. In the letter, he said his resignation took immediate effect and thanked party leaders for their support.
His defection follows months of speculation linked to internal crises within the PDP. He had earlier criticised the party as weakened by persistent challenges and held meetings with key figures, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Shekarau, who governed Kano State from 2003 to 2011, has a long history of party realignments, having previously moved between the PDP and APC.
