Residents of Imala community in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State have again raised concerns over the risk of being cut off from the rest of the state, as the only road linking the area has become impassable due to years of neglect by successive administrations.
The residents, particularly those in Ward 14, expressed deep worry that the already dilapidated road has deteriorated further in recent times and may become completely unusable with the onset of the rainy season.
They appealed to the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun to urgently reconstruct the road, which they said stretches about 7.5 kilometres.
According to them, the road has become both an eyesore and a danger to commuters.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Imala Development Coordinator, Mr. Steven Adetomiwa, and made available to journalists in Abeokuta.
The statement noted that the road, originally constructed by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has fallen into severe disrepair, thereby hindering the community’s development.
It read in part: “On behalf of the Imala Ward 14 community in Abeokuta North Local Government, we appreciate your two-term tenure as Governor of Ogun State and wish you continued success in your future endeavours.
“Imala, the headquarters of the former Western regional administration in Abeokuta North Local Government, hereby appeals for the reconstruction of the 7.5-kilometre road that runs across the township.
“This constituency, Ward 14, voted massively for you in both governorship elections.
“Your intervention in this project will bring the much-expected dividends of democracy to our people and create an opportunity for meaningful development within the constituency.
“The road, originally constructed by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, is now in a deplorable condition, adversely affecting the growth of the community.
“Chief Ifekayode, Special Adviser in your administration, and Honourable Tella can attest that this request has been consistently raised, including during past campaign engagements. We will be grateful for your prompt intervention.”
