A 24-year-old Nigerian man, Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, has been found guilty of murdering a woman he randomly attacked on a street in Leicester, United Kingdom.
Ahanonu was convicted at Leicester Crown Court following a violent incident that occurred on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, along Infirmary Road.
The court heard that the defendant had been driving erratically around the city centre while under the influence of cannabis, swerving across lanes, running traffic lights, and heading toward pedestrians and a bus stop before crashing his car.
Moments after the crash, Ahanonu attacked 56-year-old Nila Patel, who had just alighted from a bus and was walking home.
Security personnel from the nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary quickly intervened and restrained him until police officers arrived. Medical staff also rushed to assist Patel, who sustained severe injuries, including a fractured skull and brain trauma.
She was taken to hospital but died two days later, on June 26, 2025.
Ahanonu was arrested at the scene, and following Patel’s death, he was re-arrested on suspicion of murder as investigations continued.
During the trial, he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and drug-related offences, including possession with intent to supply. However, he denied the murder charge.
On Monday, March 23, 2026, the jury found him guilty of murder. He was also cleared of a separate charge of common assault linked to an earlier incident in London.
Ahanonu remains in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced.
